And if I haven't done it for a while, it takes me a long time again to figure it out :-) ) The ISO9660 file has to be read and torn apart, into its bits and pieces, and then burned to the CD. A program like Nero knows how to do that. You cannot just transfer "memtest86+-2.01.iso" to the CD and have it work.

can't make CD's from ISO file

I just downloaded the Suse iso file (filename: LiveCD-9.1.iso). Is this the correct file? Suse does not distribute ISO files for the complete distribution, if you want suse, you have to buy it. The iso you downloaded is a live distribution, that runs from the CD and doesn't install anything on the machine itself.

I think it can convert an ISO to it's own format. If you wanted to work with emulation software you could build several of these images to a directory, burn that to a DVD and load it when necessary. Knowing Linux people, there are probably device drivers that can look at an ISO file and pretend that it's a CD drive
